Do you ever get jealous of the girls in shampoo commercials? We’re beyond envious. Every time we see them tossing tresses in slow motion, we try and tell ourselves it’s all computer graphics, extensions and good lighting. That was working fine for us until the other day, when we were at the salon hashing out a new hairstyle and the women seated next to us was Pantene perfection. Mesmerized by her lustrous strands, we whispered to our stylist, "How can we get hair like that?"
The response we were hoping for was something like monthly mayonnaise wraps or lay off the back-combing. Instead she chuckled, "Oh, honey, you can't.” Apparently our angelic neighbor wouldn't hear of highlighting her hair from a box, sport a ponytail, or be caught dead using a flat iron. Oh, and she never misses her six-week trim. Puh-leaze. She might have great hair, but we’re guessing it’s at the expense of her personality. A girl’s mane is meant to be primped, permed and dyed pink every once in a while. So we’ll continue changing it up—curling, coloring and back-combing to our hearts’ content. |

Carpe Couture
It turns out our love for fashion extends all the way back to toddler-hood. “Oh yes,” our mom recently explained, “I had to limit you to three outfits a day just so I could keep up with the laundry!” What can we say—we were born to do this!
But it would have made things a lot easier on her if she’d had Rove Arounds for help. The new boutique in family-centric Linden Hills boasts a concept unlike anything we’ve ever seen. All the clothing is custom made: Shoppers pick from a set of patterns and a huge stash of fabrics, give some measurements, and voila! You’ve got a one-of-a-kind outfit that’s a perfect fit, no excessive outfit-changing needed.
Rove Arounds designs also focus on extended wearability; outfits are designed to last years rather than months. The fabrics are often vintage or repurposed, so your chic child will stand out on the playground. And ditch all your preconceived notions about prices for custom duds. A full outfit can be had for under 40 bucks!

Weekend Wear
It happens every spring; some hot new look catches our eye, and before we know it we’ve dropped hundreds of dollars on stuff that’s in the donation box six months later. We want to be up on all the trends, but how can we do that without breaking the bank?
Lucky for us, there’s Moon Goon. This little shop in downtown Hopkins is only open one weekend a month, but what it lacks in time it makes up for in a wide selection of fun, on-trend pieces. We found plenty of great shirts and dresses in fab colors to round out our spring look, as well as light jackets and raincoats for those April showers. Sales and deals ($10 off here, BOGO there) abound, which makes us feel even better about the weather warm-up.
What to do with all the cash we saved at Moon Goon? Mosey on down a few doors to Lillian’s. Same owners, same fabulous budget concept, but focused on jewelry, accessories, and shoes!

Hella Good Grub
Sometimes you have one of those lazy Sundays due to experiencing one of those crazy Saturday nights. We all do it every once in a while—throw caution to wind and let ourselves have that grand ole time. But the morning after ends up being pure misery and we swear we’ll never do it again. That is, until the next birthday/party/happy hour.
We just recently had one of those days. Of course, we tried to heal our hangover with the requisite aspirin, coffee and Gatorade, but it just wasn’t doing the trick. What we needed was breakfast, and not just any old grand slam would do. So we dragged our half-dead derrieres to the foodie’s heaven, Hell’s Kitchen, where the waiter served up wicked Lemon-Ricotta Hotcakes, mouthwatering Mahnomin Porridge and much-needed Bloody Hells (Marys)—and he was dressed in pajamas (perhaps he had one of those nights, too).
With a massive brunch menu filled with the Kitchen’s own killer concoctions, it was exactly what we needed to real ourselves from the depths of hangover hell. Omigod—and their homemade peanut butter is to die for!

Prints Charming
We’ve always admired people who can turn their hobby into a career (personal shopper, anyone?) but only a few talents actually get to do it. Case in point: Sabrina D for Riyah-Li Designs.
This local artist took her passion for graphic arts, put her own designs on merchandise, and presto—created a thriving business of custom-made apparel and home accessories. Designs range from Eco Fabulous (organic fabrics) to Random Quirkiness (emo thoughts), all printed on items from tee shirts to tiles!

It’s a Dog’s World
We wuv our witto-bitty tail-wagging Chihuahua, Chino. From our picture-snapping obsession to creating custom pet ID tags, we love showing off our four-legged BFF to family and friends.
Of course, being our pet, Chino has a flair for good design. We know because she prefers nibbling on heels over flip-flops, and our chenille sofa to her doggy bed. We also know she’d love Mod Dog modern dog prints and note cards—perfect for the posh pet-lover!
