  MINNEAPOLIS PICKS
life + style in the Twin Cities
June 19th, 2009

Why is it that on the days we have nothing to do and no one to see—let alone impress—we always, always, end up looking smokin’ hot? Our skin is dewy perfection. Our hair is an enviable mix of bed-head nonchalance and seemingly effortless layers. Even our body seems to have miraculously slimmed down and plumped up in all the right places. And what’s on our agenda? Drinks with the girls, sushi with the man, or a swanky art opening? Nope.

Nothing on our “to do” list but schlepping around the grocery store, a prescription refill, and a rockin’ appointment with Dentist Doug. Activities that warrant yoga pants, a hoodie, and flip-flops, and not the va-va-va-voomish style of our little black dress that somehow makes us look and feel like a sassy-sexy mix of Bettie Page and Marilyn Monroe. Talk about a waste of a good body day.

You know what’s not wasteful? The cool recycled bags found at www.DrivebyBags.etsy.com. Forward this issue to 5 or more friends and CC: picks@minneapolispicks.com and you just might win one of their hip totes! (And don’t miss the sweet deals in this issue, too!)

Here Comes the Sun

We’ve been beyond ecstatic since our friend told she was getting married in Maui and she wanted us as a bridesmaid. A wedding (in our minds) already meant an amassing of cute boys and free fruity drinks—add a tropical island to the mix and amazing things are bound to happen. Now all we need is a suit as smokin’ hot on as the island weather and we’ll be sure to create some heat of our own.

To find a steamy selection of swimwear we headed straight to our favorite swimwear shop tucked in the west ’burbs. The Bungalow brings together sexy, sophisticated, boho-inspired styles by OndadeMar and tantalizing two-pieces by Vix and Luxe Sauvage. To cover up with class, we opted for an ocean-blue tunic and a sizzling strapless maxi dress. They even offer babe-a-licious board shorts, perfect for our (future) surf stud. With a myriad of mix-and-match two-pieces from Vitamin A, we put together a juicy creation sure to fit perfectly with palm trees and pina coladas.

No longer wary of wedding pictures, we can focus all of our attention on catching a tan and hooking a hottie!

In the Glo

Truth be told, we are getting old. Well not that old—we still watch “The Hills,” and are known to stay out dancing all night on occasion. But after a big night out, we need plenty of sleep to look even remotely human in the morning. Long gone are the days of waking bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

Thankfully we have our own little pick-me-up after a night out with the ladies, and no, it’s not the hair of the dog. We discovered the Inner Glo facial at Glo Skin Spa. This in-demand treatment includes not only a firming and cleansing facial, but an arm, shoulder and neck massage, plus a vitamin-cocktail mask that makes you look and feel fabulous. And this cocktail is much better for you than hair of the dog!

With seven different facials (including ones for teens and men), massage and waxing services, even makeup application, it’s like a one-stop-shop for looking and feeling your best—no matter how old you feel. Mention Minneapolis Picks when you book your first visit, and take 50% off all your services!

Beautify Your Abode

They say that the best gifts are ones you would want for yourself. Of course, this hurts us as often as it helps—we end up keeping the gift for ourselves, and our aunt/friend/colleague goes home with something from our “regifting” pile. Hey, it’s the thought that counts, right?

So imagine our joy/chagrin when we walked into ATAZ, where fun, unique gifts get taken to the next level. The sunny boutique tucked in the uber-chic Galleria stocks everything from art to jewelry to greeting cards and kitchen accessories. Their disposable bamboo flatware would be perfect for our next picnic, and the adorable salt-and-pepper shaker sets could make even the most mundane TV dinner more fun. The owner prefers to deal with artisans rather than middlemen, and they always make sure the artists get a fair price for their product.

We saw dishes all the way from Norway and delightful little bike sculptures from South Africa, just to name a few sources. Whatever the spending limits or occasion, there’s something for everyone (especially you).

Buh-Bye Billboards

We’re not huge fans of ginormous billboards polluting nature’s majesty, especially when half of the ads are attempting to lure us to a tractor museum, to drink canned beer, or to stop at Wall Drug for 5-cent coffee.

Enter Drive by Bags, an innovative local design team that’s determined to conquer the big-boards-of-ugly one bag at a time. They transform billboard ads into one-of-a-kind handbags that are mini works of pop-culture art, making them both earth-friendly and cool.

Windows to the Soul

Lasik surgery ruined us. Instead of waking up with the early rays of a summer morning refreshed and thankful for being alive, we’ve got the hiss of a vampire and the need for some serious eye protection until our eyeballs adjust to daylight.

Even with bed-head and morning breath, we’re all about channeling our style muse Greta Garbo (by way of Malibu). Our latest eye candy is Sama’s Garbo frames by Badgley Mischka Eye Couture. We can’t seem to kick the Hollywood in our blood!

To Your Health

Veggies and fruits might not measure up to cake and cookies in our book, but we try hard to get in the recommended daily dose. And now there's a new way to make sure you're getting your "servings"... Produce Organic Beauty’s fresh-picked line of tasty products.

Sure, skincare might not be a substitute for healthy eating, but Apple Kiwi Eye Cream and Pomegranate Grapefruit Lip Balm make us feel good on the days when we’ve been remiss. And isn’t that healthy in itself?
