life + style in the Twin Cities

April 24th, 2009
There are certain things in life we’re loathe to give up no matter what current trends, health warnings or common sense dictates. We still happily don off-the-shoulder sweatshirts a la Jazzercise 1984, we slather our nails in black polish, chow down on the random non-organic veggie (gasp!), and occasionally (okay, regularly) toss back a can or three of good ol’ PBR—um, just for old time’s sake—all while crooning old Bangles tunes a cappella.
And guess what? You couldn’t pay us to change a thing. We firmly believe that it’s these little geekeries that help make us the quirky, fun-lovin’ and snarky gals that we are. After all, if we didn’t embrace our rampant weirdness, then that, madam, would be a shame!
Do you love and appreciate your inner goofball? Forward this issue to 5 or more friends and CC picks@MinneapolisPicks.com. You just might score a chic little treat from your favorite gals about town! |

Nesting Instincts
Sometimes we get tired of the look of mid-century modern. Not that we don’t love it (or, um, have it in our home), but it has sort of become played out in all the design mags. So when looking for a new dining table that would fit nicely with all our (of course) mid-century furnishings, we decided to branch out and look for something truly unique.
We were overjoyed with the selection at EuroNest. Not everything was our style, but what was is right on target. They carry a wide range of one-of-a-kind antiques, reproductions, even pieces made of reclaimed wood (good for the environment, good for the karma, we say). We loved that everything was solid—none of that starter-apartment plyboard for us to eat off of thank you very much—and the prices ranged enough to satisfy a budget fashionista or an interior pro.
They have a huge selection, but you may have to decide on the spot if you find something you like, as their inventory turns over quickly. Stop by next time your home needs a little unique pick-me-up or a statement-making antique!

Ooh-la, Lula
We confess to being fashion-forward city gals, always on the hunt for the latest and greatest with eyes (and wallet) wide open, so when a friend with worship-worthy style mentioned that she’d been spending her hard-earned moolah (and high-commodity time) perusing the retro racks at Lula, we decided to take a fashion cue from the past.
This fashionable Selby Avenue mainstay has long been the queen bee of the retro-metro scene, putting to shame the ultra-pricey department store big-boxes that merely echo mid-century style. Within this vintage haven’s walls, savvy shoppers with a penchant for the original can score a slew of ultra-adorable shift dresses, shoes, and chic fur shawls. We found love-lust with a pair of beautifully broken in leather cowboy boots, and a sunshiny yellow cashmere cardigan with masterful pearl beading that frankly could rival a runway design.
Toss in Lula’s eye-popping printed silk scarves and funky art-deco jewelry, and you’re left with some seriously glam new ensembles that are sure to turn heads. Who knew that looking back could look so good?

100+ Bottles of Wine On the Wall…
We’ve been known to indulge in a glass or two of wine—okay, we’re slowly pickling ourselves—but just because we can sniff, swirl, and spit doesn’t mean we actually have a clue when it comes to selecting this heavenly elixir. So what’s a wine novice to do? Grapple blindly for Pinots or resort to 3-buck Chuck? No thanks!
Whenever we need a bottle of our favorite bevie we defer to the professionals at The Wine Thief. This unassuming gem of a bottle shop offers up a mouthwatering selection of high-quality wines from around the world. Whether you’re looking for a bottle to complement some cheese-centric apps, a Sauvignon Blanc to serve tableside with lobster, or the perfect Zinfandel to pair with your pizza, their knowledgeable and friendly staff will guide you to imbibing nirvana. And if you’re not-so-much the wine drinker (for shame!) you need not fear the thief. They also stock a tightly honed selection of delish ales and top-shelf sakés.
But the best part about The Wine Thief (besides the free tastes)? Every wine is under twenty bucks!

On Our Radar
We heart the handbag, but we’re tired of pulling the ol’ switch-a-roo for different occasions. One for diaper-duty, one for the office, one for cocktails—yawn. So when we spied the swoon-worthy satchels at Post we knew we had found the answer to our problems!
Handcrafted locally from luxurious, exotic leathers and available in a myriad of colors, these beautiful handbags are made to meet the needs of modern-day women without sacrificing fiercely fabulous style.

Purely Perfect Baby Goods
As children we probably consumed our fair share of lead paint and pesticides, and hey, we turned out fine (ish), but once we had kids we began to obsess over what we put in, on, and around them.
Luckily we have stellar purveyors like Bumble Bee Boutique to help us bedeck our babes in au naturale style! We love their super-soft organic Kimonos, cute slings and mod crib sets, all perfection for our littlest loves.

Make Me Up
As complete and total product junkies, we have quite the collection of makeup. We love it all, from colored mascara to eyeshadow in every color of the rainbow—not to mention the million and one lip glosses we own.
So naturally, we need quite a few pretty containers for our treasures, and the makeup bags from Seattle-based designer Emilie Sloan are to die for. In several pretty patterns, the water-resistant cotton bags are stylish and durable—perfect for our vast collection of paint.
