March 6th, 2009
We just got a boatload of snow and guess what? We don’t care! Not only did it cover up the salty gray grime on the streets, but it also turned our yard full of frozen dog poop into a winter wonderland. Yay! And know what else? It’s freakin’ March, people! So buh-bye bitter cold and darkness and hello St. Patty’s Day frivolity and one layer of winter-wear.
We are in fact so super-stoked to welcome the impending warmer months that we’ve decided to get a jump start on our summer-selves by sprucing up our tootsies, waxing our hairy spots (sorry if that’s TMI), and firming up the extra jiggle in our wiggle by upping the ol’ workout routine. Yep, come June we’re gonna be well-coiffed, hair-free, and hot.

A-List
On a recent trip to L.A. to visit our sorely missed BFF, we were set up on a blind date with a prominent actor. (Commercials count, right?) Brad Pitt or not, we still wanted to look hot, chic, and effortlessly hip. (We are representing MN, after all!)
Enter A. Michele Boutique, our St. Paul stomping ground for celeb-worthy apparel that is both funky and fun. We found plenty of “find-me-stunning” options including boho chic dresses in lines like Ruby Pearl Clothing that scream laid-back-but-cute, maxi dresses that imply confidence and poise, tunics that are playful and hip, and rock star tees that exude that ever-coveted edgy/sexy vibe. With all clothing personas covered, AM also offers a fine selection of artisan-crafted and vintage-inspired rings, earrings, and necklaces by designers Sisi Amber, Joli, and Harry Neufeld. And if you’ve already got your leading man, you won’t feel left out—AM offers a sweet selection of gifts, handbags and baby apparel.
Rolling out the red carpet, AM is offering a 15% discount when you mention Minneapolis Picks. How’s that for star treatment?

A Blast from the Past
While we often comment on how completely crazy our family can be, they always seem to put the “fun” in dysfunctional. Every holiday gathering at our grandparents’ conjures up fond memories—Bing Crosby seeping from the radio, the smell of molasses cookies, and blast-from-the-past décor—all making us feel at right home. So we were surprised when we arrived this Christmas to find Grams was hip to the MP3 player, purchased pre-made pies (heresy!) and redecorated her retro abode with the winnings from a lucky casino trip.
All we had left were distant memories until a friend told us about a 50s-60s-70s boutique full of funky items. Swank Retro is plum-stocked with the obvious—a blaze-orange turn-dial TV—and the obscure—a blue-haired toy poodle smoking a cigarette. And everything oozes character and charm. Best of all, mid-century furniture is all the rage—we dug the 50’s diner-style table set with red vinyl upholstery and adored the dazzling array of bright-colored glass lamps and chandeliers. And after sifting through the vast array of vintage clothing and accessories, we realized a girl has no hope (luckily) of ever completing her closet.
What’s old is new again! Stock up on these rockin’ retro finds that eclectically compliment the modern maven in you!

The Whole Enchilada
Every Minnesotan itches for a little sunshine this time of year. Enough with the dirty snow, high heating bills and cold cars! Bring us sunshine and tropical drinks (delivered by a stunning pool boy with a sexy accent).
Those of us who can’t migrate south owe Tim McKee and Josh Thoma a big thank you. This dynamic duo (Hello? Solera? La Belle Vie?) opened a little piece of Mexico on Nicollet Mall. Barrio, their tequila bar and eatery, offers up numerous ways to beat the winter blues, including spiced shrimp tacos, scallop ceviche, and made to order guac that whisked us away to a warm, sunny island, and the margaritas can’t be missed. Not a tequila fan? Try a refreshing Macho Camacho, made with blood orange and a splash of cava for a nice zip. It’s like spring break, just classier (not a yard glass or an over-partied college freshmen in sight).
Short on pesos? Barrio’s happy hour will leave you stuffed and buzzed. Get your fill of cheap tacos, enchiladas, and discounted drinks from 4–6 pm and 10 pm–midnight, Monday through Friday. Ole!

You’ve Got Mail
This past week, one of our dearest girlfriends got engaged. Of course, we meant to send a card immediately. But then life got in the way, and our late-night scramble for a card uncovered a lame pre-fab from the groc.
With GreetQ, you can pick and personalize your card, schedule a delivery date and they mail it for you. We went ahead and set up a queue of cards we wanted mailed over the months and skipped the Post altogether.

Heavy Metal Haven
Occasionally we pop into Target to get a super cheap jewelry fix, but after our last el-cheapo buy turned our forearm a ghastly shade of green, we decided to hold out for the good stuff.
Enter Lavender Cottage. This Etsy jeweler has a great selection of earrings, bangles, and pendants, masterfully crafted from metals and many emblazoned with stones. We love the sparkly, stacked bangles (perfect for hiding our green arm) and the rings are edgy-organic perfection.
