February 20, 2009
We have a pal who’s notorious for having severe beer goggles (we’re talkin’ Mr. Magoo here, people). She’d have a few beers and suddenly some buck-toothed Barney would look like a big hottie. We found this strange until we realized that we had the same affliction, only with shoes and clothes.
Once after a Cosmo (or three) at MOA, we found ourselves investing in some shiny pink ballet flats that wrapped up our legs with ribbon. We were so taken with them we actually wore them out of the store, completely convinced that we were rocking a chic dancer vibe, when in reality we were accentuating our admittedly Corgi-ish legs. Lesson? Don’t drink and shop, lest you wake up the next day with fuzzy teeth and a pair of Zubaz snuggled up next to you in bed. Or worse! You wake up next to some fugly dude wearing said Zubaz. Talk about the dangers of imbibing. |

Picture This
We aren’t “hope chest” kind of girls, but we do like to keep special mementos from our life— especially pictures. While cleaning house this year we discovered five big boxes crammed with photos of college days (yes, mostly fuzzy, off-center shots that include beer—lots of beer), holidays (ugly sweater parties!) and special days (um, our wedding?). A little organization was in order, so we immediately thought of Picturebook.
Owners Kelly and Liz are sitting pretty in their blue-walled loft space, offering everything from custom-designed wedding/baby/special event invites to photo albums and frames, even photo retouching and restoration. We were smitten with the adorable photo albums and boxes, perfect for our organization needs and also wonderful gift ideas. We loved the wedding and baby albums—perfectly kitschy yet modern—and the finishing touches like photo corners and picture CD holders.
Whether you want to get organized, need some customized invites, or are looking for a Holga camera (the only place we’ve seen them in the Twin Cities), stop by for some truly unique goods and services. And tell them we sent you!

Thrown, Spun, and Fired
You don’t have to be a "Ghost " fanatic to appreciate housewares that don’t scream, “Martha Stewart.” So after a night spent googling local boutiques, downing Chinese takeout, and watching a “Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style” marathon, we got up the next day and drove to Two 12 Pottery and Gift Gallery.
This sprawling ceramic studio and storefront stocks an impressive collection of gorgeous and meticulously handmade pottery, lovingly crafted by local artists. From cool fired mugs emblazoned with eye-popping colors to bowls, plates, and artwork, this handmade haven is a must-hit for any dish junkie. Not only did we leave with a slew of new kitchen goods, but we also scored three new cookbooks, some fun jewelry, and a mess of birthday cards for our nearest and dearest, making Two 12 Pottery and Gift Gallery not only a fabulous boutique celebrating the talents of our local ceramic masters, but also our new go-to for gift-giving needs.
So if you’re sick of stocking your cupboards with the typical big-box fare, then hit Two 12 and spruce up your pantry with some local wares. We swear your cereal will taste better!

Ice, Ice Baby
There are some fads with a clear expiration date: Hammer pants, Pepsi Clear, “Mambo Number Five.” However, when it comes to one of the most recent trends in pastry, we're optimistic this confection won't be going the way of the acid-wash jean.
Who doesn't love a cupcake? They're cute, deadly delicious, and thanks to the crave-worthy eatery Cupcake, our new favorite indulgence. This delicious bakery and café specializes in the mini-dessert and boasts a vibrant and diverse selection. We dug the Mexican Hot Chocolate—rich cocoa with a hint of chilies, topped with frosting and a marshmallow. Their pumpkin cupcake, which used to only surface in the colder months, was so popular that it's now available year-round. They can barely keep red velvet in stock. And if you're more of a traditionalist, the chocolate or vanilla with homemade cream cheese frosting will be right up your alley.
For those of you who don't do cupcakes, the shop also offers croissants and scones (whole wheat no less), freshly baked breads (mmm…. sourdough), soups, and sandwiches, making this bakery too legit to quit.
