We’ve been hearing a lot about the resurgence of the moustache, and we’ll be honest: we’re not quite sure what to think. On the one hand our Grandpa was an uber-cool cowboy who absolutely rocked a handlebar moustache, but Brad Pitt’s new lip accessory? Well, we find it a titch smarmy. Now don’t get us wrong, he’s still a hottie, but there’s something about a pencil-thin ’stash that conjures up images of John Waters and bowm-chicka-wah-wah’s that we just can’t get past.
And then there are men who get creative and do funky stuff with their facial hair, which frankly we don’t get at all. Big, braided, Billy-goatees, mutton chops, and Fu Manchus? No thanks! Seriously, how would men like it if we shaved funky patterns into our leg hair or let our armpit hair go willy-nilly? They wouldn’t! All we ask is for the same consideration.
One thing we know we love? Treats! Forward this issue to five friends and cc: Picks@MinneapolisPicks.com and you could win a lovely bauble from Natural Beauty Jewelry! (See below for more info!) |

Shop Your City
We love to support local businesses, but the mall’s vast variety can be sooo appealing. Clothing, jewelry, kitchen gadgets, ginormous pretzels, and Coach bags all under one roof? It can be irresistible. But for those wanting to kill two birds (or maybe four or five) with one stone, just head to Shop in the City.
This place offers truly thoughtful diversity—great jewelry from Jennifer Dahl (cute initial pendant necklaces), and unique apparel, with items that will suit a slew of ages, shapes and tastes. They also carry the biggest array of bags from Vera Bradley we’ve ever seen anywhere, along with sleek travel totes from Baggallini—a travel-inspired line created by a flight attendant—plus kitchen accessories, baby clothes, Minnesota-centric gifts, bath and body products, books, and novelty items. We loved their kitschy global warming mugs that are emblazoned with coastlines that disappear when hot liquid is poured into the cup. So wrong, but so funny!
So swap a Something-dale and Shop in the City. You’re guaranteed to find unique items for everyone on your list.

All That Glitters
Every once in a while we wish we had a boyfriend just so we might be showered with gold and diamonds. Then we realize how conventional (and wimpy) we sound. After all, a Picks girl is modern, self sufficient, and creative, and while we may prefer a man for some things (warming up the car, massages), we’re capable of treating ourselves to the finer things in life!
Jewelry designer T. Lee is known most notably for her hugely popular and innovative 24k gold and platinum weave designs, but in her fine jewelry shop she can create whatever your heart desires. Have the vintage diamonds from grandma’s ring but want to wear them in a fresh new way? T. Lee will place them in a modern silver bangle, perfect for showing off at your next swank soiree. And the spot-on variety of ready-to-wear jewelry includes everything from colorful drop earrings to thin wooden cuffs with spots of twinkling diamonds.
With custom-made capabilities and intricately beautiful creations right at our fingertips, we may end up spoiling ourselves more than any man ever could!

Another Helping, Please
The holidays are over and the party-pounds are now glaringly evident. Just yesterday we had to unbutton our pants to sit down in our car. (Yikes!) And while we care about good health, we also care (a little too much) about good food. There’s just something about winter that makes us feel like warming our tummies and our souls with delish comfort foods, and that’s exactly what we did at Ingredients in White Bear.
Known for their hearty dishes packed with flavor, Ingredients is the perfect casual gathering spot for a glass of wine in the bar, a bit of live music, and a comfort-food dinner that’s truly world-class. Their menu boasts options ranging from butternut squash soup, poached pear and Arugula salad, and risotto croquette to burgers (we inhaled the applewood-smoked bacon with guac in two bites). Entrees include a host of delights including Home-style Meatloaf, Grilled Pork Chop, and Gnocchi and Beef Brisket.
We say you only live once (at least we think so), so go ahead and satisfy that hunger! Those New Year’s resolutions can wait.

You Wanna Be a Rock-Star Bay-bay
Though we love the light blues and pastel pinks of traditional baby garb, we can’t help but be smitten with Jaminga’s funky tot-wear and accessories.
This hip online purveyor stocks a tremendous selection of bibs, slings, bags, and clothes that are embellished with Punk, Rock, and even Asian-Inspired designs, as well as an ultra-sweet selection of organic and eco-friendly options. We flipped for their baby leg-warmers which are bound to illicit oohs and aahs, and are seriously the cutest things ever!

Shave On
All that talk about ’staches got us to thinking that our man could use a little primp and prime, so we were pumped to spy the cool Shave the Planet gift set at Lush.
Loaded with manly beautifiers like shaving cream and
bamboo soap, this kit is bound to shine up any guy’s mug.
Plus with Lush’s to-die-for selection of natural, girly must-haves (we heart their body butters), you can snag a boatload of goodies for yourself!
