  MINNEAPOLIS PICKS
life + style in the Twin Cities
September 12th, 2008

There are certain things in life that we are complete and total suckers for... like fluffy puppies, shoe sales and wine, but one of our guiltiest pleasures is the 80’s-themed movie marathon, complete with junk food, girlfriends and cocktails. (This is hush-hush, double-top-secret, BTW.)

We can’t be certain, but if we had to ballpark how many times we’ve watched Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club, the number would fall roughly between seven hundred and a bajillion.  And (excluding our current love) there is absolutely nothing in this world that can make us tingle and swoon like Lloyd Dobler in Say Anything. We’re not sure if it’s the soundtracks, the teen angst, or the hopefulness of young love, but we do know this: we can never get enough.

Make it Happen

We’ve all been there: You show up for a cocktail party at your neighbor/coworker/boyfriend’s obnoxious second cousin’s house, only to be envious and baffled by their impeccable décor. Eclectic pieces arranged so nonchalantly and exquisitely that you ’re left wondering how to get your place looking that swank.

Too bad we weren’t clued into Id Inside Design before our last decorating fiasco! This Warehouse District store front plays host to an impressive collection of rare and interesting pieces including cool mirrors, pillows, coffee tables, couches, and art. Add in the knowledgeable and friendly staff who masterfully help pull it all together, and Id becomes the perfect place to transform any abode into a customized showstopper. Love a couch, but wish it was bigger, longer, lower… leather? No worries—they’ll make it happen!

Like to mingle while you shop?  They host fabulous parties every few Saturdays, complete with a DJ, specialty wine (or vodka) bevvies, and maybe some stimulating conversation with a handsome gent… Hey, it could lead to a hot make-out session on your fabulous new customized couch.

The Big Blowout

We don't watch much cable TV, but when we do it's overly-competitive Bravo shows with tons of drama. A little Project Runway (“you’re out!”), Date My Ex (“let’s just be friends!”), and our recent fave, Shear Genius (“you’re cut!”) had us eager for our own local challenge: find the most stylish salon in the cities or risk being on the receiving end of a Bravo-worthy exit phrase.

The Winner: Salon George, a classy cuttery delivering fabulous tresses with chic decor. Nestled on a neighborhood side street in West St. Paul, this salon will blow away the competition. We gave points for SG’s exposed brick walls, metal piping, Oriental rugs, suspended copper mirrors, Asian-inspired dressers, and bright contemporary canvas art.  Beyond the star-quality digs, they've got the total treatment: stone massages, waxing (including teeny-tiny Brazilians), tints, facials, cuts, colors, manis, pedis and a sophisticated display of silver Peruvian jewelry at the checkout counter.

Jaclyn Smith would be sure to call it a winner, but we don’t care who’s judging. Salon George makes our final cut!

A Perfect World

We don’t ask for much in life. Just a world where sample sales are uncrowded and well-stocked, manicures don’t chip, and Sex and the City DVDs last forever. But until hell freezes over we’ll have to count on meeting our girls for a really good meal, some great wine, and some hi-larious convo at the Loring Pasta Bar.

Aesthetically charming with a strong focus on live music, the dining room is one part decorative brick and lavish bar, and one part nature hike, making for a duplicitously romantic vibe. Potted plants and trees line the sidewalk dotted with tables and comfy chairs. The wine and beer list is fabulous, and the food delish (obviously). We fell hard for the Blue Apple Salad with warm bacon and caramelized onion cider dressing, and the Sautéed Catfish with Mixed Sprouts and Kumquats served over baby spinach. Both so succulent that we darn near fainted from the olfactory delights.

With so much to love we’ll be back week after week. Oh, what a wonderful world!

Knit-Picky

In our opinion one can never have too much cashmere. Maybe that’s why at the first hint of autumn we begin hoarding sweaters like they’re on the verge of becoming currency, especially from inspired hot-spots like Souchi.

Must-haves from this heavenly boutique are too numerous to name, but if forced to choose, fall favorites would include the gorgeous cardigans with built-in scarves (genius!) and the luxe sweater-dresses (hint-hint, honey). Either way we’ll be cozied up in some serious style.

Beautifying Baubles

In our world, new fall wardrobes demand new fall jewelry, and this season’s no different, so when we spied the edgy style of Beth Pohlman we jumped for joy.

This fresh designer offers up a bevy of beautifully hand-constructed baubles that perfectly satisfy our cravings for wearable glam. We love the Black Swag earrings and the Sea Urchin necklace. Both masterfully capture an organic and ethereal vibe that we l-o-v-e love!

Doin’ a Double-Take

We are bored with a capital B with the leather handbag we’ve been toting for the last nine months, but no matter how hard we tried, we just couldn’t find our new “It” bag. But our heart skipped a beat when we laid our pretty peepers on the Soiree Bag.

Beautifully constructed of supple leather and adorned with a bright, eye-catching floral print, this roomy bag is destined to have heads turning wherever it’s toted.
