July 18th, 2008
We woke up with a zit today, and while this isn’t an earth-shattering phenomenon, it does beg the question: when exactly do we get to leave puberty? Honestly people, we’re in our thirties and we just don’t think we should be dealing with the curses of youth anymore. We’ve already gone through our awkward stage (mostly)!
In our younger years we had some pretty rough (okay freakishly horrible) moments. We had braces for five years (we hated those rubber bands). We constantly fought nature by lovingly embracing the spiral perm, and we wore waaaaay too much eye-liner—we’re talkin’ raccoon-eyes every day. We survived all the tragically embarrassing moments of teen-hood, and yet here we sit with a pimple the size of a pumpkin. We obviously did wrong in a former life…
But you can do right, right now! Forward this issue to five worthy friends and cc picks@minneapolispicks.com and you could win a luxe treat from Angel Face Botanicals. (See below for more info!) |

Roam If You Want To
For the most part, we've got that modern woman we-want-it-all thing down. Career? We love our job. Clothes? We always dress to impress. Kids? We have a handsome and, ahem, able-bodied hubby. Crib? Okay, we have an exceptionally humble abode (read: raggedy area rug, dingy dining table and dare we say it—a sofa we salvaged sophomore year). How will we ever host dinner parties and play dates in such dilapidated conditions?
Enter Roam. We felt right at home (or what home should rightly feel like) with its haute housewares and uber-cool contemporary furniture. We scoped out eco-friendly vases by Artecnica and scooped up a sleek silver tea set by Alessi. The sculptural felt handbags by Josh Jakus and chic Silver Cocoon jewelry are gem finds for the accessories-geared gal. Mixing mod European kitchenware by Eva Solo and architectural American furnishings by Minneapolis-based Blu Dot, Roam runs the global design gamut with the greatness of ease.
With such fashionable and functional furnishings, you’ll be sure to impress your guests and yourself!

The Belle of the Bakery
We’ve been known to drool over especially good sample sales, spa treatments, corn dogs, and handbags, but nothing’s more enticing than a sinfully good slab of cake.
Nestled neatly on Excelsior Boulevard is Bellaria Bakery, a cozy café full of fresh-baked cakes, tarts, croissants, and confections that are sure to leave your mouth watering. We can’t resist their chocolate truffles made from the finest imported European chocolate, and the Tuxedo cake with Bailey’s Irish Cream filling is dangerously decadent. Can’t stomach sweets as your main lunch fare? Bellaria offers a simple and satisfying menu that includes tasty salads and savory soups. Everything is baked and cooked to perfection in-house, guaranteeing deliciously good eats for lunch, after work, or the morning after a night on the town. (We hear the soup is a killer hangover remedy.)
Tying the knot? Bellaria Bakery adorns their ultra-inviting abode with an awe-inspiring selection of gorgeous tiered wedding cakes, so pleasing to the eye and palate, in fact, that you might actually find yourself longing to traipse down the aisle just for taste of one of their divine designs.

Wherefore Art Thou Cool Gifts?
One of our best friends is this exceedingly cool guy who’s the curator of a swank San Francisco art gallery, who’s always in the-know. From emerging bands and hot restaurants to camping gear and wine—if it’s new, now, and noteworthy, he’s got the skinny. Unfortunately this makes him super intimidating to buy for, and with his 40th birthday looming we figured we needed some help.
Enter Romeo and Juliet Shops, our favorite new go-to that stylishly answers the age-old question of what to buy members of the opposite sex. This fabulous boutique is loaded with a bevy of spot-on goods, masterfully hand-selected with gift-giving in mind, eliminating the drudgery of scoring the perfect present. We love the deliciously scented aromatherapy bath kits and the vampy style of the 1940’s vintage-inspired lingerie. The leather martini shakers scream, “Bond, James Bond,” and the DIY beer-brewing kits are perfecto for our friend out west who has everything.
And the best part? No gift wrapping required! Romeo and Juliet stocks a variety of chic, pre-wrapped gift boxes for each unique item it houses.

With This Ring
Our guy is rugged and a little bit of a bad boy, and generally doesn’t want anything to do with man-jewelry, but when we spied a cool ring by designer Amy Tavern we threw caution to the wind and bought it anyway.
Made from oxidized sterling silver, and peppered with a random pattern of holes, this subtly cool ring is both edgy (for him) and modern (for us), and exudes a vibe that’s nothing short of fierce.

Our Heart’s Desire
Since we bought our first home, a sweet little fixer-upper circa 1951, we’ve become borderline obsessed with mid-century modern design, so it’s no wonder that we’ve developed a deep, unfaltering love for Velocity Art and Design.
Stocked with everything from eye-popping kitchen towels by Tikoli to retro-chic lamps, accessories, and art, this site won’t disappoint with its multitude of mid-century must-haves. Be still our mid-century modern hearts!
