  MINNEAPOLIS PICKS
life + style in the Twin Cities
July 4th, 2008

We love summer with every fiber of our beings, save for one small thing: swimsuits. Or more specifically, shopping for swimsuits. We can think of nothing else that can so swiftly and efficiently dash all feelings of self-confidence, yet year after year we find ourselves with loaded arms and high hopes headed for the nearest dressing room.

We stuff ourselves in and out of bikinis, tankinis, and one-pieces, surrounded by three-way mirrors and bathed in the unforgiving glow of department-store lighting. Why do we torture ourselves? Deep down inside, are we masochists? Are we gluttons for punishment? We don’t have the answers, but we do know this: After a day of wiggling in and out of scanty apparel we deserve a treat (and a cocktail), and so do you!

Forward this issue to five friends and cc picks@minneapolispicks.com and you could win a pair of stylish earrings from Enso Jewelry! See below for more details on these super-fab designs.

The Perfect Pairing

We had a roommate in college who had a last-minute first date, and in preparation borrowed our clothes and then cut her own hair. Obviously this was not one of those “then they got married” first-date stories.

Too bad Head to Toe wasn’t around. This part-salon, part-clothing and accessories store is all awesomeness. Seriously? What more can a girl ask for than a flattering new ’do (using products from Bracato), a cute and edgy dress, and some vintage baubles? They carry lines like Max and Cleo and Free People, with a focus on adorable hipster-y dresses that go perfectly with the brightly colored shoes by Colcci. And the fab one-of-a-kind vintage necklaces, bracelets, and flower pins will totally complete any new look.

So the next time you’re in need of a makeover, head on over and tell them Minneapolis Picks sent you. Owners Rita and Fiona are super sweet and helpful, and can size you right up. Insiders tip: Don’t miss their one-year anniversary sale on July 12, where everything in the store is 20% off!

Super Soak

Spinning class, followed by a marathon morning meeting, gobs of emails, lunch at our desk while assembling a last minute presentation… aargh! Even if we found a few minutes to check Perez, chances are we’d be too stressed to laugh at the starlets. On days like this, few things take the edge off like relaxing in a steamy tub.

Enter Blissful Bath. This sweet suburban outpost is the perfect place to stock up on all you need to kick your soak into high gear. Subtly scented bath bombs, bubble bars, and fizzy cupcakes (which look good enough to eat… but we don’t recommend it) will turn any tub into a luxe personal spa. We’re obsessed with their fabulous selection of aroma melts and Shea-butter body frostings, so perfect for keeping our uber-relaxed buzz going all night. Plus, every irresistible treat on Blissful Bath’s menu is lovingly handmade in-store with 100% natural ingredients.

Not up for the drive? No worries! You can get your bath confection fix at their stellar online shop—rubber ducky and all.

Accessory Obsessed

It started in first grade with slap bracelets and candy necklaces. By age ten, we promised to feed Scruffy every day if we could pierce our ears. In high school, we blinged-out our belly button (and Scruffy) and snuck our mother’s pearls for a secret rendezvous with our quarterback crush. As we got older, the allure of adornment has deepened. Scruffy sparkles with Swarovski, we ravenously raid our mom’s (sister’s, friend’s) jewelry box, and are stupid-sweet on the ultimate arm candy, Tom Brady.

We’ve found the place to satisfy our cravings for the latest, most exclusive, eye-popping pleasures. Max’s is renowned for its coveted collection of jewelry, high-end housewares and mouthwatering imported chocolates. We lusted after luminous gold necklaces by Vincent Agor and went gaga over gorgeous glass vases by Jacob Stout. The gold and platinum foiled wine glasses are must for a summer soiree. Layer Nina Basharova sterling silver bangles with beads of onyx, amethyst or sapphire to polish off your party outfit!

We may not have a quarterback boyfriend, but we’ll be feeding our appetite for special accessories at this gem of a shop!

Love, True Love

We are head-over-heels for scarves right now. We wrap them around our waists at the beach, nonchalantly drape them around our necks, and use them as chic cover-ups when the summer nights grow chilly.

That’s why we can’t get enough of the subtly chic scarves by Love Quotes. Available in a ton of lust-worthy colors and adorned with sweet little declarations of love, these laid-back beauties add a much needed dose of style to any outfit they’re paired with.

Get in Touch

Have you ever wondered about messages from beyond? Do you wonder about your purpose in life? We’ve thought about this stuff, too, but we don’t really get anywhere on our own.

Check out "Angels in the 21st Century," a new meditation and deep-relaxation CD created by world-renowned clairvoyant Sonja Grace. She's a consultant to celebrities, spiritual leaders, and regular Janes, and she interprets the past, present and future—healing emotional and physical problems.
