  MINNEAPOLIS PICKS
life + style in the Twin Cities
March 28th, 2008

It’s official—we are dead sick of snow, salt, slush, muck, heavy boots, fur-lined parkas (faux of course), below 30 temps, and all things winter-related. So much so in fact that we hopped online and bought two tickets to the first warm-weather destination that we laid eyes on. And who could blame us?!? Spring has barely sprung and once again we find ourselves with shovel in hand, bundled up to our eyeballs, looking very much like a tick about to pop (flattering, we know).

But before we can jet out of this frozen wasteland we call home, we need to stock up on some summer-worthy threads of epic proportions. We’re shopping at Drama and so should you, even if warm weather is still just a fantasy. Forward this issue of Minneapolis Picks to 5 friends and cc picks@minneapolispicks.com, and you could win a $25 Gift Certificate to Drama!

Striking Style

We know it just snowed, but that doesn’t mean we can’t start dreaming up a warm-weather wardrobe complete with fresh silk tops and summery cocktail dresses. So what if open-toe shoes are still a recipe for frostbite? At urban boutique Drama we can put all of our winter worries aside and score this season’s most notable must-have fashions.

This on-the-cusp boutique offers up a fabulous mix of alluringly feminine tops, premium denim, and beyond-gorgeous party wear that we swear will leave you completely smitten! We fell in love with the subtle sophistication of their Nu Collective line (a fave among the starlets), and with the luxe chiffon blouses by Bilingual Clothing, perfect for work or play. And we absolutely couldn’t resist the old-Hollywood glamour of the House of Henry eveningwear. Add to that Drama’s pocket-friendly prices, and you’ll be left with enough extra change to splurge on some extras—like the exquisite jewelry, handcrafted by local artisans.

No matter what you’re looking for, Drama promises compelling designs and stylish perfection!

Who’s That Girl?

We have a love-hate relationship with our hair. It’s baby-fine, prone to cowlicks, and pretty much just lays there lifeless on our head. We desperately needed someone to analyze our hair and face, listen to how we live, and then take all of the aforementioned info and miraculously transform us into a raving beauty. Tall order? Not for the exceptional staff at Five Two Six Salon Spa.

This on-par local gem features an array of au courant beauty treatments, ranging from decadent facials to relaxing massages, and has quickly become our new favorite place. And not because of their prices (affordable), art gallery (stunning), or products (Bumble & Bumble), but because they managed to take our plain-jane, fuzz-prone hair and convert it into the most edgy-elegant bob that we have ever laid eyes on. It is so smokin’ hot that we’re actually shocked we can rock it, not to mention mesmerized by the sultry stranger we now see in the mirror.

So stop in today and discover the new you. You’ll leave looking wildly gorgeous, with an attitude to match.

Can’t Wait to Go Home

We love a cocktail party where the martinis are inventive, the music is right, and the décor is just as much a part of the scene as the guests. Unfortunately our last swank soirée left us feeling like our kitschy pad could use an overhaul. So for stylish new digs with just as much character, we sought out urban boutique Go Home.

This eclectic shop masterfully mixes its elements, offering up scores of gift and home-décor items, as well as tempting fragrances and a sweet selection of furniture. We found love with an eye-catching, vintage-esque sofa, perfect for our living room. And since it’s a new spin on an old piece, it comes minus that funky old-sofa smell. This charmingly offbeat shop also boasts a compelling selection of Votivo and Illume Candles, as well as fun coffee-table books, crazy-mod lamps, hand soaps by Dirty Girl, and an assortment of totally fetching jewelry by Heinz Brummel.

With so many irresistible things to choose from, we’re sure you’re biggest dilemma will be how to avoid buying everything.

Artful Neckwear

The thought of longer days (and lower necklines) motivated us to seek out some inspired new jewelry to dress up our décolletage. Leave it to local jewelry line Ruby and Lola to make our dreams come true!

Designer Susannah Kyle masterfully combines an array of elements including semi-precious stones, sterling silver and Swarovski crystals to create gorgeously chic earrings and necklaces. The result: jewelry with spot-on style, delicate lines, and an understated, organic playfulness that is nothing short of deadly cool.

Say Yes to Style

We’d heard tales about YesStyle.com. Of its magnitude, of its selection, of its radically affordable prices, but we had no idea what we were missing!

This crazy-huge site features thousands of compelling pieces from fashion-forward meccas like Hong Kong and South Korea, and thanks to their low prices you won’t have to choose between the earthy-chic jackets and the sexy peep-toe pumps—you can snag both. Spend $150 (trust us, not difficult), and shipping is free!

Lately we’ve been searching for a new way to express our sassy selves, so thankfully we have Maybe You Should Die to help us say just the right thing!

This hilariously creative local site specializes in the non-traditional, offering up suggestive paper goods, killer totes, fun apparel, Meanie Bags, and a slew of other items that are definitely more naughty than nice (we had no idea that curse words could look so cute). Take a cue from this hip crafter, and tell your nearest and dearest what you really mean.

We nearly shopped ourselves silly this week, not to mention toootally going out on a limb and chopping off long semi-lustrous locks (seriously ladies, we’re talkin’ 8 inches) just so we could give you, dear readers, a first-hand account of one stellar salons services. Do us a fave—tell one and all about Minneapolis Picks! Plus, it’s good karma!
